Taiwan reports 555 domestic COVID-19 cases and 19 deaths

Taipei, May 28 (CNA) Taiwan on Friday reported 555 domestic cases of COVID-19, two imported ones, and 19 deaths, according to the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC).

Of the domestic cases, 297 were newly confirmed cases and 258 were from a backlog of test results confirmed over the last several days, the CECC said.

The new cases bring the total number in the country to 7,315 since the outbreak began early last year, of which over 5,500 are domestic cases reported in the last two weeks.

The 19 deaths reported on Friday were 14 men and five woman aged in their 40s to their 80s, who died between May 21 and May 27, the CECC said.

To date, Taiwan has reported 78 deaths from COVID-19, including 49 in the last four days.

Since last Saturday, the CECC has retroactively added 1,906 domestic cases to its daily case counts going back to May 14.
