The Overseas Community Affairs Council (OCAC) 2019 Lunar New Year Goodwill Mission will perform in 13 cities in eight countries in the Asia-Pacific region from February 13 to March 10. A pre-departure public performance was arranged for Keelung Cultural Center in Keelung City on January 20. OCAC Deputy Minster Kao Chien-chih attended the show, presented the flag to the Mission leader and offered encouragement to the members. The show was watched by more than 500 people amidst a happy atmosphere.
Kao hopes the Mission will reacquaint overseas compatriots with the folk culture of Taiwan through the performances, and moreover, display Taiwan’s cultural soft power.
Chen Ching-Ping, Director of Keelung City Cultural Affairs Bureau, said that cultural performances demonstrate the lifestyles of ordinary people. She thanked the OCAC for using overseas performance tours to convey Taiwan’s traditional culture and, in doing so, letting local people feel the festive atmosphere of Lunar New Year in Taiwan.
The Mission comprises mainly of an acrobatic troupe made up of students from National Taiwan College of Performing Arts. The troupe combines highly-creative choreography with theater, dance and artistic formation performance methods to interpret Taiwan’s folk acrobatics and display the rich diversity of Taiwanese culture. During the performance, troupe members will leave the stage to interact with the audience, sure to bring a stream of laughter from audience members.
