The Formosa Association of Student Cultural Ambassadors San Diego Chapter (FASCA-SD) held its September Monthly Meeting on September 19, 2026 bringing together students, parents, mentors, and families for an afternoon of cultural celebration, teamwork, and leadership development.
Held just before the Mid-Autumn Festival, the gathering brought all FASCA-SD families together for the first time this year. Students learned about Taiwanese Mid-Autumn traditions, preparing, grilling, and serving a Taiwanese-style barbecue for their parents. The experience combined cultural learning with teamwork, responsibility, and service.
The event was planned and carried out by FASCA-SD student members serving as project leaders. Students coordinated activities, worked with members, and handled the event's many details with guidance from mentors. Through the process, they practiced communication, teamwork, problem solving, and taking responsibility for an event from planning through execution.
The meeting also marked the transition to a new student leadership team, with Katherine Tsuar and Jason Poliak beginning their terms as FASCA-SD presidents. Our dedicated members who contributed more than 100 hours of volunteer service over the past year were also recognized. Each member received a Volunteer Award certificate along with a special Taiwanese black bear keychain, custom-designed by one of our own FASCA SD members. It was a meaningful way to celebrate their dedication, commitment, and spirit of service to our community.
Mentors led a discussion inviting students to consider what it means to be a leader. Students identified qualities including communication, responsibility, teamwork, initiative, and service, reflecting the different ways leadership can be practiced within a team and community.
The afternoon concluded with team-building activities, including tug-of-war, a spoon-and-egg race, and a blindfolded cup-pickup challenge. The games encouraged students to communicate, trust one another, and work toward a common goal while giving new and returning members another chance to build connections.
Project Leader Aria Chan reflected on the experience, saying, “Planning this event was a success. We learned how to manage and organize an event, which will help me as I go into this year.”
The September gathering offered a meaningful start to the new FASCA-SD year, bringing families together through culture, welcoming new student leaders, and giving students an opportunity to put leadership into practice.
FASCA-SD continues to empower Taiwanese American youth through leadership, service, culture, and legacy, creating opportunities for students to learn by doing, lead by serving, and contribute to the community they are helping to build.
