Young sprinters set new national records at college games
Taipei, May 8 (CNA) Young Taiwanese sprinters set new national records in the men's 100-meter sprint and the 110m hurdles at this year's National Intercollegiate Athletic Games being held at National Taiwan University.
Hank Yang from National Taiwan University of Sport clocked a time of 10.22 seconds in the men's 100-meter sprint, smashing the national record of 10.28 seconds set by Yi Wei-chen in 2012.
Yang was awarded a cash prize of NT$60,000 (US$1,990) by the Chinese Taipei Athletics Association for breaking the record, and his coach Tao Wu-shiu received NT$30,000.
The world record in the event is 9.58 seconds, set by Usain Bolt of Jamaica in 2009.
Another young sprinter, Yang Wei-ting from National Taiwan Normal University, also set a national record with a time of 13.57 seconds in the 110m hurdles, bettering the previous mark of 13.61 seconds he set in June 2016.
Yang received a cash prize of NT$50,000 for breaking the record, and his coach Tsai Yu-ju was presented with NT$25,000.
The 110 hurdles world record is currently 12.80 seconds, set by Aries Merritt of the United States in September 2012.
In the 110m hurdles race, Chen Kui-ru from National Taiwan Sport University finished second in 13.62 seconds and Wu Han-wei from National Pingtung University finished third in 13.92 seconds.
