Taipei, May 8 (CNA) Taipei was ranked the tenth most visited destination in the Asia Pacific by international travelers, with 7.4 million international overnight arrivals last year, according to the results of the 2017 MasterCard Asia Pacific Destinations Index released recently.

The second MasterCard Asia Pacific Destinations Index, an offshoot of Mastercard's annual Global Destination Cities Index, ranked 171 destinations, including island resorts as well as towns and cities across the region, in terms of the total number of international overnight arrivals; cross-border spending and total number of nights spent in each destination.

The 171 destinations are drawn from 22 countries across the Asia Pacific and represent 90 percent of all international overnight arrivals within the region.

According to the index, Thailand's capital Bangkok topped the survey, with 19.3 million international overnight visitors, followed by Singapore and Tokyo with 13.1 million and 12.6 million overnight arrivals, respectively.

This is the first time Taipei has featured in the top 10 with 7.4 million international overnight arrivals, ahead of Shanghai's 6.5 million and Sydney's 3.9 million. In the 2016 index the city ranked 15th.

Japan, China and Hong Kong are the three major sources of visitors to Taipei, according to the 2017 index's findings.

Meanwhile, Taipei saw 500,000 more international overnight visitors last year compared with the previous year, the sixth fastest growth rate among the top 20 most popular cities in the region, according to the findings.

In terms of total expenditure by international tourists, Taipei was ranked fourth with US$9.9 billion, up three notches from the previous poll. Taipei was also the top destination by total expenditure in the Greater China region, the survey found.

The poll also found that the number of outbound trips to destinations in the region taken by Taiwanese reached 23.8 million last year, making Taiwan the third largest source of tourists in the region, behind China's 55 million and South Korea's 35.7 million.
