Taipei, Dec. 2 (CNA) Taiwan on Friday congratulated Maha Vajiralongkorn on formally becoming the new king of Thailand, after late King Bhumibol Adulyadej died in October at the age of 88.

In a statement, Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs offered congratulations to Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn who ascended to the throne on Thursday after accepting an invitation from the country's parliament to succeed his father as Thailand's new king.

Noting that Taiwan and Thailand have conducted close cooperation in trade, tourism, culture and education, the ministry said that Taiwan's government "hopes to strengthen bilateral friendship and continue to promote bilateral exchanges based on the existing foundation, to create a win-win situation."

King Bhumibol was widely loved and regarded as a pillar of stability during decades of political turbulence in Thailand, foreign media reported.

Vajiralongkorn's accession to the throne is believed to ease worries that the country was headed for a period of instability following the death of King Bhumibol, the reports said. (Courtesy of CNA)
