The Overseas Community Affairs Council (OCAC) held the 2016 Commissioners' Conference of Overseas Community Affairs Council (CC-OCAC) at Taipei’s Grand Hotel October 23-25. President Tsai Ing-wen attended the opening ceremony and afterwards viewed the overseas compatriot education achievements exhibition outside the venue. Greeting the folk culture teachers present, President Tsai affirmed the OCAC’s compatriot affairs work for setting down a solid foundation for the New Southbound Policy.

OCAC Minister Wu accompanied President Tsai and stated that overseas compatriot affairs based on compatriot education are essential to the R.O.C.’s steadfast diplomacy. Every year, the OCAC provides over 650,000 textbooks to nearly 1000 overseas Chinese schools, deepening the connection of the offspring of the overseas community with Taiwan. The overseas Chinese student policy promoted for more than 60 years has nurtured more than 120,000 students, more than half of whom were from Southeast Asia. The role of these alumni as the cornerstone of the New Southbound Policy is greatly appreciated by President Tsai.
