Q25. My son is 18 years old and holds a valid R.O.C. (Taiwan) passport with an Overseas Compatriot Identity Endorsement. He is currently studying abroad but has received a notice from the District Office to complete military registration. Since he cannot return to the R.O.C. (Taiwan) to apply for the Overseas Compatriot Identity Certificate for Military Service, how can he apply for a deferment of conscription?

He may apply to the District Office of his household registration to be registered as a general conscription male, stating that he is currently studying abroad. He should then apply to the National Immigration Agency for Exit for Study status. During the approved period of study, he may enter and exit the R.O.C. (Taiwan) multiple times. After graduation, he may apply to OCAC for the Overseas Compatriot Identity Certificate for Military Service, and then update his registration at the District Office to be recognized as an Overseas Compatriot Conscription Male.
