South Africa, officially the Republic of South Africa (RSA), is the southernmost country in Africa. With over 59 million people, South Africa is a multi-ethnic society, encompassing a wide variety of cultures, languages, and religions. With abundant supply of natural resources, well-developed finance, judicial system, communications, energy, and transport sectors, it has been classified by the World Bank as a newly industrialized country, the second-largest economy in Africa, and the 33rd-largest in the world. As a member of the Commonwealth of Nations, G20 and one of the founding members of the African Union, it maintains significant regional influence, and is a middle power in international affairs.
Following the end of apartheid, the first multi-racial elections, held in 1994, ushered in majority rule under an ANC-led government. After apartheid ended, however, crime, poverty and inequality remain widespread. South Africa has since struggled to address apartheid-era imbalances in wealth, housing, education, and health care. About a quarter of its population is unemployed and living on less than US$1.25 a day. Along with many African nations, South Africa has been experiencing a brain drain in the past 20 years. It has thus resulted in large white South African communities abroad.
