Côte d'Ivoire, officially the Republic of Côte d'Ivoire, is a country located on the south coast of West Africa. Since it was a French colony, it has close ties to France and its official language is French. In the 21st century, its economy has been largely market-based, and it still relies heavily on agriculture, with smallholder cash-crop production being predominant.
Since independence in 1960, its economy has grown faster than that of most other African countries. Prior to the global shock triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic, Côte d’Ivoire still had one of the most robust growth rates in Africa and in the world. For the region, it has a relatively high income per capita and plays a key role in transit trade for neighboring, landlocked countries. The country is the world's largest exporter of cocoa beans, a significant producer and exporter of coffee and palm oil.
