The Overseas Community Affairs Council (OCAC) held the two-day Workshop for Nationwide Overseas Compatriot Student Counsellors December 24-25. OCAC Deputy Minister Roy Yuan-Rong  Leu hosted the opening ceremony on December 24. The event was attended by 152 overseas compatriot student counsellors from 122 universities and schools that undertake the Overseas Youth Vocational Training  Program and the 3+4 Vocational Education Program for Overseas Compatriot Students.

In his speech, Deputy Minister Leu thanked nationwide overseas compatriot student counsellors for their efforts and for playing the important role of talent connectors in the New Southbound policy on behalf of OCAC Minister Hsin-hsing Wu. He pointed out that the OCAC promotes overseas compatriot counselling work with a one-stop service counter concept and in combination with various resources and expressed the hope that the counsellors will continue to serve overseas compatriot students and attract more overseas compatriot youth to come to Taiwan for study. He said that, assisted by the counselors at each school, overseas compatriot students are able to overcome difficulties in adapting to living and studying in Taiwan and smoothly complete their studies. When overseas compatriot students graduate and return home, they become the most reliable pro-Taiwan forces, he said.

Scholars and experts were invited to give talks on the topics of Southeast Asian history and culture and psychological counselling; OCAC staff gave detailed explanations of related measures such as overseas compatriot student counselling work, the Overseas Compatriot Card, entrepreneurship and student loan regulations and application process, scholarship application and the national health insurance scheme subsidy system; representatives from the Ministry of Labor, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Economic Affairs, Bureau of Consular Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, National Immigration Agency, National Health Insurance Administration, National Tax Administration and the Credit Guarantee Fund were invited to engage in exchange and interaction on issues of concern. The OCAC hopes that inter-agency communication and cooperation can reduce the pressure and burden of overseas compatriot student counsellors.
