Director Wang speaking to FASCA members
A gathering of FASCA members - learning and celebrating Taiwanese identity and history. On October 17th, the Formosa Association of Student Cultural Ambassadors in the San Francisco Bay Area hosted its Annual and Bimonthly Meeting. With a packed schedule that included an opening performance, advisor and VIP speeches, FASCA cabinet introductions, a Double Ten history lesson and Kahoot!, bonding games, and more, everyone had a fulfilling afternoon.
The FASCA Advisors present were introduced: Katy Wu, Noya Lee, Carol Hu, and Peggy Hsu. The new FASCA cabinet was presented: President Grace Koo, and VPs Albert Li, Veronica Kuo, Phoebe Lee, Sharleen Ho, Avriel Chiu, Aydan Tsai, Irene Hung, Christopher Shih, Rex Kuo, and Jessica Tseng. Director Wei-Zen Wang and Deputy Director Astrid Tsai of the Culture Center of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Offices in San Francisco (Milpitas) were also present. Director Wang spoke to the FASCA members about the significance and impact that FASCA has had all over the world, and applauded the members for their contributions.
The highlight of the event was the Double Ten history lesson and Kahoot!. Presenters went over the events leading up to the historical date back in 1911. They explained who Sun Yat-sen was and even had members compare the Double Ten logos from different years. Presenters spoke on some traditions that occur during the national day, and broke down what the different parts of the Taiwanese flag represented.
Irene Hung, one of the diabolo team VPs, shared her experience with us. “The planning for the bimonthly occurred months before, where we had to draft up ideas about what we were going to teach, what games we wanted to play, as well as the overall theme of the event. For this event in particular, I was in charge of creating the slides and games. Making the slides, I would say, was probably the hardest part of the whole planning. Even though it was in front of the familiar faces that I see at every FASCA event, I still got the nervous jitters. Watching the event transform from a bullet point on a planning document into reality was the best part. It was incredible to see everyone enjoying their time at the event we worked so hard for; ultimately, the biggest reward.”
Aydan Tsai, a lion dance team VP, said that “during our bimonthly FASCA event, I learned more about Taiwanese culture, history, and traditions. I learned about Sun Yat-sen and his role in history, as well as the significance of October 10 to the Taiwanese community. Through these activities, I gained a better understanding and appreciation of Taiwan’s rich culture and heritage. I also had the opportunity to bond with other FASCA members and build stronger friendships. Overall, this event was a great opportunity to expand my knowledge of Taiwanese culture while growing closer to the FASCA community.”
Over fifty people were in attendance for this event. From learning more about Taiwan and playing games to bond with other members, everyone had a great time!
