NTSO to present Verdi’s ‘Messa da Requiem’ in Taichung
National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra (NTSO) will present a performance of Giuseppe Verdi’s ‘Messa da Requiem’, led by NTSO Principal Guest Conductor Lan Shui
The National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra (NTSO) will present a performance of Giuseppe Verdi’s “Messa da Requiem” on Mar. 15 at the National Taichung Theater, led by NTSO Principal Guest Conductor Lan Shui (水藍).
Verdi was more than a composer; he was an artist deeply immersed in the turbulence of his era. His music helped unite the Italian people in the 19th century, bringing vivid characters and profound emotional resonance to life on stage. Through his work, he shared a vision of freedom, dignity, and patriotism with audiences of all backgrounds. In 1873, the death of novelist Alessandro Manzoni—a figure Verdi greatly admired—moved him to complete “Messa da Requiem,” a work that transcends the traditional funeral mass to become a response to society and history.
Joining Conductor Lan Shui on stage is an outstanding ensemble of soloists and choirs from Taiwan and beyond. The vocal cast features soprano Ling-hui Lin (林玲慧), mezzo-soprano Hai-yun Cheng (鄭海芸), tenor Peter Lodahl, and bass Wen-I Tseng (曾文奕), with choral support from the Taichung Artist Chamber Choir, the Taipei Philharmonic Chorus, and the NTCU Department of Music Chorus.
