Taipei, Jan. 1 (CNA) New Taipei Metro set a ridership record in 2025, carrying more than 30 million passengers over the year.

Danhai Light Rail Transit (LRT), Ankeng LRT and Circular Line also posted single-day ridership record highs during New Year's Eve celebrations in Tamsui, said New Taipei Metro Corp.

The Danhai LRT carried more than 36,000 passengers on New Year's Eve despite rainy weather, marking the second-highest single-day total on record, the company said.

Single-day ridership on the Circular Line, boosted by heavy transfers from the Taipei Metro and bus systems, exceeded 90,000 passengers on Wednesday, according to the company.

Together, the Danhai LRT, Circular Line and Ankeng LRT carried more than 135,000 passengers in a single day, breaking the system's previous single-day ridership record, the company said.

To accommodate heavy New Year's Eve travel demand, New Taipei Metro Corp. brought three additional trains into service on the Ankeng LRT that had been under maintenance at the Danhai Depot, it said.

Reflecting on 2025, ridership on the Circular Line rebounded from earthquake-related disruptions in 2024, exceeding 22.04 million passengers for the year after maintenance work and shortened intervals, with peak-hour intervals reduced to under 5 minutes.

Rising commuter demand within the Tamsui-Taipei area helped push Danhai LRT ridership up to more than 6.01 million in 2025, while annual ridership on the Ankeng LRT exceeded 2.03 million, aided by the rollout of a monthly commuter pass priced at NT$150 that allows unlimited rides.

The company said annual ridership surpassing 30 million marks an important milestone, adding that it will continue to shorten train intervals, improve service and enhance the New Taipei Metro commuting network.
