The Overseas Community Affairs Council(OCAC) held Parents’ Day of the 3+4 Vocational Education Program for Overseas Compatriot Students on October 10. It was jointly chaired by OCAC Minister Wu Hsin-hsing, Vice Minister Roy Yuen-rong Leu, Chief Secretary Chang Liang-min and attended by legislators Lin Li-chan and Tung Hui-chen. The grand event was attended by more than 425 overseas compatriot students and their parents from Vietnam, Indonesia and the Philippines.
Wu stated that the Parents’ Day was held to give the parents the chance to travel to Taiwan to see their children and also to allow them to understand the overseas compatriot schooling environment and learning situation, so they know that their children are being looked after properly. He encouraged the students to continue their education at a higher level after completing the 3+4 Vocational Education Program. It is understood that the first group of students enrolled in the program are now in their third year at university.
Lin Li-chan said that she came to Taiwan as the bride of a Taiwanese national 22 years ago. She has a special affection for overseas compatriots from Southeast Asia and has also placed special emphasis on the problems of the education of overseas compatriot students from Southeast Asia. She thanked the OCAC and the Ministry of Education for holding a national discussion meeting at which the problems of schooling and life could be understood face-to-face. Tung Hui-chen affirmed the 3+4 Vocational Education Program, regrading it as the best channel for overseas compatriot students to study in Taiwan.
Groups formed by overseas compatriot students gave song and dance performances and the students of each school shared every aspect of their study time in short films.
Minister Wu Hsin-hsing said that the OCAC held Parents’ Day to allow parents to understand the schooling environment and study situation of overseas compatriot students.
