15 overseas compatriot youths from English-speaking countries in the southern hemisphere participated in this year’s Overseas Youth English Teaching Volunteer Program subsidized by the OCAC. During their first week in Taiwan, all volunteers underwent required training that prepared them for teaching English in school settings before they were dispatched to 5 selected primary and junior high schools located in Miaoli County.
All participants showed a tremendous spirit of service; for more than 2 weeks, they devoted their time and expertise to the English education of underprivileged students in rural Taiwan. Around 250 schoolchildren benefitted from the program this year, which makes the total number of beneficiaries to date reached 961.
It is the hope of the OCAC to continue the effort to elevate the quality of English education in remote localities in Taiwan by enlisting the help of overseas compatriot youths whose inspiration for students in Taiwan cannot be overstated.
