Taipei, Dec. 6 (CNA) A global 5G alliance signed an MOU with Taiwan's information and standards association on Wednesday during its four-day annual general meeting in Taipei.
5G-ACIA (Alliance for Connected Industries and Automation), the world's largest alliance of companies and organizations working towards the integration of 5G in industrial applications, was established in 2018, with this year's meeting being held in Taiwan for the first time.
The assembly meeting is co-hosted by the Taiwan Association of Information and Communication Standards (TAICS) and the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) with the backing of the Ministry of Economic Affairs, according to the TAICS, a non-profit organization tasked with bridging the gap between local ICT (information and communications technology) with global organizations and initiatives.
More than 100 domestic and foreign manufacturing and communications equipment companies -- including Bosch, Siemens and Mitsubishi Electric -- are in attendance and have set up booths showcasing state-of-the-art 5G applications, the ministry said.
The signing of the MOU between 5G-ACIA and TAICS took place on Wednesday during the alliance meeting that began Monday and will culminate with "Industrial 5G Day" on Thursday.
At the MOU signing ceremony, 5G-ACIA General Chair Andreas Müller said the two parties "share a common mission of [ensuring] 5G transforms the manufacturing industry and propels the fourth industrial revolution to the next level."
"To make this mission a reality," close collaboration between many different layers of the IIoT (Industrial Internet of Things) industry and ICT industry players is vital, but exchanges with regulatory bodies are also needed, which was outlined in the MOU signing, he said.
The MOU signing was witnessed by Minister of Economic Affairs Wang Mei-hua (王美花) and the head of the European Union representative office in Taiwan Filip Grzegorzewski.
"5G-enabled smart manufacturing is one of the most critical 5G applications, with the global 5G smart manufacturing market estimated to reach US$140 billion by 2030," Wang said.
The minister said Taiwan is "a major global player in ICT and semiconductor manufacturing," and that Taiwanese companies have also demonstrated "remarkable strength and resilience in the global supply chain."
"These fields with 5G applications in Taiwan can serve as a basis for further collaboration with international 5G-ACIA members," speeding up the adoption of 5G smart manufacturing, she continued. "With the MOU signing between TAICS and 5G-ACIA today, we are hoping to provide feedback in the future on our experience of building smart factories with 5G applications to international standards."
Grzegorzewski said the MOU is an excellent example of cooperation between Europe and Taiwan at a time when Taiwan's "top-class technology is more present in Europe."
