Besides being a densely populated country in Western Europe, the Netherlands also presides over three island territories in the Caribbean. The four largest cities in the Netherlands are Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague and Utrecht. Amsterdam is the country's capital, while The Hague is the country's administrative center. The port of Rotterdam is the largest port in Europe and the world's largest outside East Asia. Utrecht is a major hub of road and railway networks and a center of commerce and cultural events.
The Hague is a city on the western coast of the Netherlands and is also the capital of the province of South Holland. With a population of 520,704 and more than 1 million people (including those in the suburbs), it is the third-largest city in the Netherlands, after Amsterdam and Rotterdam. The Hague is the seat of the Dutch government; Dutch Parliament, the Supreme Court, and the Council of State are all located in The Hague. Most foreign embassies and 150 international organizations, including the International Court of Justice and the International Criminal Court in the Netherlands, are in the city. Alongside New York City and Geneva, this makes The Hague one of the major cities hosting United Nations branches.
Accordingly, the number of Taiwanese immigrants living in the Netherlands amounts to about 5000.
In order to facilitate closer relationships among our overseas compatriots, there are approximately 15 overseas compatriot associations, all with different common interests or attributes, in the Netherlands.
Furthermore, most overseas compatriots take the educational affairs of the next generation particularly seriously. So, in the hopes of promoting traditional Chinese characters and Taiwan's diverse cultural learning, there are several overseas compatriot schools in the Netherlands. All of these schools are in close collaboration with the OCAC to pass down important Taiwanese cultural heritage.
