On February 15,  enthusiastic students from local Chinese schools in the Washington D.C. area joined the Lunar New Year celebration at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, MD. They brought the Lunar New Year traditions to life for NASA employees with their vibrant performances.

Mr. Lee Hou, an advisor for the Formosa Association of Student Cultural Ambassadors DC Chapter (FASCA DC), is dedicated to promoting Taiwanese culture to mainstream groups. Not only is he a talented diabolo performer, he is also a renowned diabolo instructor in the D.C area. He and his students presented performances to celebrate the Lunar New Year, which also successfully served as an opportunity for cross-cultural exchange. During the event, they showcased their exquisite diabolo skills, attracting the attention of NASA employees and guests. The performances were full of rhythm and dynamism, earning much applause from the audience.

“We hope to introduce the charm of Taiwanese culture to everyone through activities and performances, and we also hope to promote exchanges between different cultures and bring joy to people for the Lunar New Year,” said Mr. Hou.

Ms. Nicki Chen, a language teacher at the Taiwan Center for Mandarin Learning (TCML) in the Washington DC Taiwanese School, also took the opportunity to educate her TCML students about the Lunar New Year traditions celebrated across many Asian countries. She used picture displays to introduce the unique activities, food customs, and traditional costumes associated with the Lunar New Year, enabling students to appreciate the beauty of multiculturalism through both auditory and visual experiences.

The event concluded with joy and laughter, building a meaningful cultural bridge for exchanges with mainstream groups.
