With Taiwan's new legislature set to open its first session next week, incoming lawmakers from two opposition parties say they're in favor of advancing legislation to legalize absentee voting. And scientists warn that wars, climate change and AI-driven disinformation mean humanity is as close to extinction as it has ever been, with the Doomsday Clock staying set at 90 seconds to midnight. Also:
- A new survey of American and Taiwanese experts says China is unlikely to be able to invade Taiwan but could blockade its main island and that some form of Taiwan Strait crisis is likely in 2024.
- Two documentary shorts by Taiwanese American filmmakers have been nominated for an Academy Award.
- Self-taught artist Huang Yung-fu, who transformed a former military village in Taichung into a colorful visitor attraction with hundreds of his murals, has died at the age of 101.
