Taipei, Oct. 28 (CNA) The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) hopes for peaceful dialogue between central and regional governments of Spain to resolve the Catalonia issue, a MOFA spokesman stated Saturday.
MOFA spokesman Andrew Lee said that MOFA hopes that the Spanish central government and the regional government of Catalonia can resolve their issue peacefully, and that it would closely monitor the situation through its representative office in Madrid.
Catalonia declared independence a day earlier after its regional parliament approved the move, with 70 votes in favor from the 135-seat chamber. Almost immediately afterward, the Spanish Senate voted to impose direct rule on the region.
The unprecedented step of approving measures allowing the Spanish government to impose direct rule over Catalonia passed with 214 votes in favor and 47 against, leaving it in the hands of the Cabinet to decide what measures to take regarding the region.
