The "2024 OCAC Overseas Compatriot Youth Taiwan Study Tour" (8th Session: Southern Hemi-sphere Region 2) successfully concluded its 14-day program from December 16 to 29, 2024. A total of 98 young participants from Singapore, Brunei, Mauritius, South Africa, Brazil, New Zea-land, and Australia gathered in Taiwan for this enriching experience. Organized by the Overseas Community Affairs Council (OCAC), the tour offered overseas youth a chance to explore Tai-wan's rich and diverse culture, inspiring a deeper appreciation for the island while expanding their educational horizons.
The 14-day itinerary included a mix of dynamic and reflective theme-based activities aimed at cultural exploration. Participants delved into Taiwan's multicultural heritage with visits to key sites such as the Hakka Museum in New Taipei City, the Indigenous Ita Thao Community, the In-digenous People's Park, and the historic Hsinchu City God Temple. The program coincided with the Western holiday season, featuring a special visit to the iconic Christmasland in New Taipei City, which added a festive and memorable touch for the youth from the Southern Hemisphere, offering them a unique December experience unlike any they had before! Participants also had the opportunity to explore Taiwan's cutting-edge industries and urban planning through visits to the TSMC Museum of Innovation, the Discovery Center of Taipei, and Wenshan Sports Center. These activities provided valuable insights into Taiwan's high-tech sector, forward-thinking city plan-ning, and thriving sports culture.
Additionally, the participants visited National Taipei University, where they took a leisurely stroll through the picturesque campus and engaged in meaningful exchanges with international students enrolled there. Making the most of their time in Taiwan, the group also explored some of the country's most iconic natural landscapes, including the serene Sun Moon Lake National Scenic Area, the expansive Longpan Grassland in Kenting, Eluanbi Lighthouse, and Sheding Nature Park, allowing them to experience Taiwan's breathtaking geographical grandeur firsthand. The tour also included a visit to the National Palace Museum, where participants admired Taiwan's exquisite national treasures, such as the famed "Jadeite Cabbage" and "Meat-shaped Stone." To immerse themselves in local culture, they explored the historic Sanxia Old Street, sampled street food at bustling night markets, and navigated Taiwan's efficient MRT system. These activities offered a deep dive into Taiwan's multifaceted charm, from its cultural heritage to everyday life.
Participants shared that the most memorable aspect of the tour was visiting National Taipei Uni-versity, where they were inspired by the beautiful campus, the grandeur of the library, and the op-portunity to connect with peers. Many expressed a newfound interest in pursuing further studies in Taiwan. Another highlight for the participants was the stunning beauty of Sun Moon Lake, like a "gem left by angels on earth." During a boat ride across the lake, they sampled local delicacies such as Ah Po's Tea Eggs and stinky tofu, which they found absolutely delightful.
The 14-day program concluded in a heartwarming with a traditional dance performance in Mauri-tius, and memorable atmosphere. Participants encouraged one another and expressed their hopes of meeting again in Taiwan in the future, with many looking forward to the opportunity to pursue their studies here.
