The Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Miami (TECO in Miami) is one of 13 offices that represent the Republic of China (Taiwan) in the United States. Our office offers consular, commercial, informational, and cultural services to the State of Florida, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, Bahamas, and Turks and Caicos.
Florida sits in the southeast corner of the U.S. covering 58,664 square miles; that is almost four times the size of Taiwan. Its population of roughly 19 million is comparatively less than the states of California and Texas but near equal to New York state. An increase in population is expected due to the warm weather, which attracts a number of retirees each year. Taiwanese compatriots are also included among these retirees, scattered predominately throughout the cities of Miami, Coral Springs, Boca Raton, Orlando, Tampa, Jacksonville, Gainesville, Melbourne and Tallahassee. Miami and Orlando contain the largest concentrations.
Organizations of Overseas Compatriots
Many organizations in Florida were established by Taiwanese immigrants. Among them are at least fifty active communities, composed of new immigrants.
Cultural and Educational Situation
Overseas compatriots take the educational and cultural affairs of the second generation seriously. Chinese language and culture classes are usually set up at a local school facility during weekends. Most of the books and materials are provided by the Overseas Community Affairs Council(OCAC). Some schools prepare their own teaching materials.
Taiwanese Business and Trade Affairs
Overseas compatriot-operated businesses mainly focus on trade, real estate, finance, hospitality, and information technology. Many immigrants also focus on restaurant, food preparation, and food supply careers. There are seven important Taiwanese chambers of commerce with functions and duties including exchanging valuable business information, establishing strong nonprofit social networks, and promoting the members' mutual interests.
