Surabaya (Indonesian: Surabaya) is the capital and largest city of East Java Province, Indone-sia, and is the second-largest city in Indonesia after Jakarta. It is located in the northeastern part of Java Island, bordering the Madura Strait to the east, with Madura Island across the strait to the north, Gresik Regency to the west, and Sidoarjo Regency to the south.
Surabaya has a population of around 4 million, with the majority being Javanese. The Madu-rese from the neighboring Madura Island and the Chinese are the two significant minority groups in the city. The Chinese-Indonesian community is over 1 million, with around 60% being from Fujian, 30% Hakka, and the remaining 10% from other Chinese ethnic groups.
Surabaya is a major import hub for Indonesia, while key export commodities such as sugar, cof-fee, tobacco, teak, cassava, rubber, spices, vegetable oils, and petroleum products are also shipped out through its port.
