Geographical Area
Malaysia comprises the Malay Peninsula, Sabah, and Sarawak. It consists of 13 states and three Federal Territories — Kuala Lumpur, Labuan, and Putrajaya.
The 11 states on the peninsula are collectively known as Peninsular Malaysia (West Malaysia), covering 131,578 square kilometers.
The two states on the northern part of Borneo Island, namely Sabah and Sarawak, are referred to as East Malaysia, with an area of 74,398 square kilometers and 124,449 square kilometers, respectively.
Malaysia's total land area is approximately 330,434 square kilometers.
General Overview
Malaysia is a multi-ethnic, multicultural, and multilingual nation. According to data released by the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM), the country's total population in 2024 was approximately 34.1 million, of which citizens accounted for 30.7 million.
Among the citizens, the ethnic Chinese population numbered around 6.87 million, representing 22.4% of the total citizen population. The Chinese community constitutes the second-largest ethnic group after the Malays.
The official language is Malay (Bahasa Malaysia), while English and Mandarin Chinese are also widely used, particularly among the Chinese community and in business settings.
Islam is the official religion of Malaysia, yet the freedom of religion is constitutionally guaranteed.
Malaysia has an equatorial tropical maritime climate, with average temperatures ranging from 21°C to 32°C throughout the year.
Ethnic Chinese are primarily concentrated in Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Ipoh (Perak), Melaka, Johor Bahru, Kota Kinabalu (Sabah), and Kuching (Sarawak).
Taiwan–Malaysia Exchanges
Under Taiwan's New Southbound Policy, Malaysia has been identified as one of the key partner countries for strengthening bilateral exchanges.
Taiwan and Malaysia maintain close and long-standing economic, educational, and people-to-people exchanges.
Based on statistics published by the Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (MATRADE), the bilateral trade volume between the two sides reached MYR 176.105 billion (approximately USD 39.13 billion) in 2024, marking a 38.5% year-on-year growth and achieving a record high.
In 2024, Taiwan ranked as Malaysia's 6th largest export destination and 4th largest import source.
Malaysia’s major imports from Taiwan mainly comprise integrated circuits, printed circuit boards, and hot-rolled and cold-rolled steel products,
while its key exports to Taiwan include integrated circuits, liquefied petroleum gas, electronic instruments and apparatus, and semiconductor devices.
