On the afternoon of July 11, the Expatriate Division of the TECO in Vancouver hosted a youth exchange symposium. Teacher Chiang from Linkou Kang Chiao International School led a delegation of 11 teachers and students to participate in in-depth dialogues with members of the FASCA Vancouver Chapter. Using Vancouver as an observational lens, the event guided Taiwanese youth and Taiwanese-Canadian youth to explore global issues based on their diverse backgrounds.
The event successfully created a platform for open expression and active listening, effectively enhancing youth critical thinking, cross-cultural communication, and leadership skills. Chiang added that students stepped up as active participants rather than passive listeners, demonstrating open-minded and rational discourse.
The symposium centered on four main topics: the impact of US-China-Canada relations on immigration and the economy, balancing personal freedom with public safety in livable city development, the shock of immigration policy shifts on the labor market, and cultural identity among overseas Taiwanese youth. Moving away from traditional lectures, the session utilized group discussions and debates, enabling students to transcend binary thinking, evaluate the trade-offs behind public policies, and showcase a mature global perspective.
