Taipei, Jan. 11 (CNA) Amazon Web Services (AWS), a cloud computing subsidiary of Amazon.com Inc., signed a memorandum of understanding Thursday with the New Taipei City government to set up a joint innovation center in the city.

At the signing ceremony, New Taipei Mayor Eric Chu said AWS will invest intellectual rather than financial capital in the center, which will help New Taipei and Taiwan as whole to better connect with the rest of the world.

Under the MOU, AWS will provide training and technical assistance to all small and medium-sized enterprises in Taiwan, leading them to upgrade their technology, and will help schools to cultivate talent, he said.

One of the aims is to develop at least 15 innovative teams a year, Chu said, adding that the center will have enormous potential for generating production value.

The center will also help Taiwan to develop more innovative companies, he said.

AWS has established similar centers in the Chinese cities of Shanghai, Chongqing and Qingdao and has also set up a foothold in South Korea, according to Chu.
