Taipei, Oct. 11 (CNA) The National Immigration Agency (NIA) announced Thursday that it has implemented a system that now allows foreign students to apply online for their Alien Residence Certificates (ARCs) and other required documents.

Effective immediately, foreign and overseas-based Taiwanese students no longer have to go to an NIA office to apply for an ARC or to change their relevant personal data, the NIA said in a press release.

The online system is designed to make it more convenient, time efficient and cost effective for foreign students to obtain new documents or renew their ARCs, and to register change of information, particularly at the start of the new school year, said Huang Ling-yu, head of the NIA's Taipei office.

With the use of the online system, the processing time for an ARC will be reduced from seven to five working days, while extensions and change of information will take two working days instead of five, she said.

According to the NIA, there are currently, some 51,000 foreign and overseas-based Taiwanese students in Taiwan.

Online applications for student ARCs and other relevant documents can be submitted on the NIA website at: https://coa.immigration.gov.tw/coa-frontend
