Taipei, Oct. 27 (CNA) The 2020 Kinmen Ocean Art Festival will take place in Lieyu Township from Nov. 1-29 with various activities -- such as cycling among artworks -- that highlight local culture and different sightseeing options in the rural township of offshore Kinmen County.

A cycling route has been drawn up allowing tourists to ride among a series of land art creations being built near scenic spots in the township for the month-long art festival, according to the Kinmen County Department of Tourism.

Land art refers to art that is made directly in the landscape, sculpting the land itself into earthworks or making structures in the landscape using natural materials such as rocks and twigs.

Eight work teams led by different artists, including paper sculptor Cheng Jo-han and land artist Yu Wen-fu, were invited to work on the land art project, incorporating local culture with the aim of raising environmental awareness, the department said.

Yu's team, made up mainly of students from National Quemoy University, have been working on an artwork on the shore, using bamboo skewers on the beach to symbolize farmers' hard work of dibbling, or using a stick to make holes in the soil for planting seeds.

"The project boosts students' inspiration," said Yu. "They make an important contribution to the level of creativity of the project."

In addition to the cycling tour, other events that have been planned for the Lieyu festival, to open every day from noon until 8 p.m., will include outdoor concerts and art performances, as well as a fair selling local artisanal products, according to the county department.
