25 teachers and students from the 10th and 11th grades of Roland Park Country School in Baltimore, Massachusetts, received a warm welcome as they visited the Culture Center of Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office in Washington DC.
First time participants in the Splendor of Taiwan activity organized by the Culture Center, the students attended a shadow puppetry production course where volunteer teachers briefly introduced the history and features of shadow puppetry and instructed students to pick their favorite characters in Journey to the West for puppet production. The students all had fun learning as the teachers used both Chinese and English to communicate with them in group discussions. At the end of the course, students took turns giving a one-minute shadow play on stage in groups. Before the students went home with their hands full of handmade shadow puppets and Taiwan national flag souvenirs, they all said their sad farewells to the staff of the Culture Center and the teachers.
