The idea and the spirit of international volunteerism have been widely recognized and affirmed around the world, and have become important values for global youth. Recognizing this, since 2006, the Overseas Community Affairs Council has cooperated with the Ministry of Education in hosting the "Overseas Youth English Teaching Volunteer Service program", expanding the scale of services year by year, and inviting the Hakka Affairs Council, the Council on Indigenous Peoples, and NGOs to participate.
Over the last 13 years, 4,850 overseas youths have come to Taiwan for service, benefiting roughly 35,000 students. Over the years, parents, teachers, and students involved in this program have praised the diligence and passion of the volunteers. Our volunteers have planted a seed that will grow into future learning of English.
This year, 546 youth volunteers from the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Australia will come to elementary and junior high schools in 15 counties and cities across Taiwan to conduct volunteer English teaching services. Because of the relative shortage of english teaching resources in Taiwan's rural areas, both parents and children cherish the precious international friendships and English learning opportunities created by our volunteer English teaching program. In order to assist volunteers to adapt to the environment and the English teaching process promptly and efficiently, the first week of the program includes training on teaching skills, organized by the Ministry of Education. Volunteers going to the same school will be put in the same group, solving problems and sharing results together, supporting each other, building team spirit and creating long lasting friendships.
