Premier Liu Chao-shiuan said Friday that the government-financed Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) will help domestic manufacturers churn out some 100,000 electric motorcycles in four years.
Liu made an inspection tour of the ITRI headquarters in Hsinchu, northern Taiwan, where he was briefed on the progress of research and development of various high-technology products in general and on environmentally friendly electric motorcycles in particular.
He said the government will see to it that some 100,000 electric motorcycles, powered by replaceable batteries, are produced by private motorbike manufacturers around Taiwan in four years amid louder calls for energy-saving and carbon-cutting measures.
ITRI Chairman Chintay Shih, speaking at the briefing, said that with a gigantic team of 5,715 high-caliber people - including 1,018 Ph.D. holders and 3,151 master's degree holders - the institute has accumulated patent rights for 8,905 items.
"The ITRI also helped establish 148 new companies for high-tech manufacturing, with some 18,490 'friends of the ITRI' involved in the industries so far," Shih said.
Currently, he added, the ITRI is focusing its R & D efforts on five major fields - how to help companies and the public reduce energy consumption and cut carbon dioxide emissions; biomedicine and healthcare; intelligent life; the Internet, and advanced technology production.
