Taipei, May 4 (CNA) A solar-powered mechanical scarecrow is the latest weapon to be deployed against birds on millet fields managed by an agricultural station under the Ministry of Agriculture, an official said on Thursday.

The Taitung District Agricultural Research and Extension Station invited nearly 100 farmers to demonstrate the upgraded scarecrow as the millet harvest season approaches.

Chen Yu-chu, deputy director of the station, said the solar-powered scarecrow prevents birds from eating the millet across large fields by pulling the steel cables which make a noise to scare away the birds, noting that smaller fields at farms of 1,000-2,000 square meters can use full-cover bird nets to keep the birds away.

Tseng Hsiang-en, a specialist with the station, said the mechanical scarecrow costs about NT$55,000 (US$1,825), but reduces the cost of hiring people to chase the birds away and reduced millet output.
