Singapore, April 24 (CNA) Tainan was honored with the 2017 APEC Energy Smart Communities Initiative (ESCI) Best Practices at an award ceremony in Singapore on Monday.

Tainan won the gold medal for a low carbon model town with an initiative dubbed "Solar Powered City -- Tainan Reaches for the Sun," the first time a local government in Taiwan has won the highest honor in the "low carbon model town" category.

Tainan Mayor Lai Ching-te attended the ceremony in Singapore and shared the city's experience with the participants.

Lai said Tainan has abundant sunlight, which makes it suitable for developing green energy technology, and the city has pioneered the installation of solar panels.

From 2011, when Tainan started promoting the Solar-Powered City program, to the end of February 2017, the city has approved 3,621 applications to install solar power equipment, and 245MW of capacity that generates 300 million kilowatt hours of electricity annually has been installed, according to the city.

That solar power capacity has resulted in a reduction of 1.67 million metric tons of carbon, the city government said.

A total of 197 entries submitted by the 21 APEC member economies were selected to compete in this year's Energy Smart Communities Initiative. (Courtesy of CNA)
