Taipei calla lily festival kicks off
Taipei, March 24 (CNA) The 2017 Calla Lily Festival -- one of the biggest flower festivals in Taipei -- kicked off Friday, offering visitors an opportunity to enjoy a sea of flowers at various farms in the Yangmingshan area over the coming month.
A total of 11 recreational farms are participating in the annual event, which will run through April 23 in Yangmingshan's Zhuzihu area, according to Taipei City's Department of Economic Development.
During the festival, visitors have the opportunity to pick calla lilies at the farms and join eco tours to explore the Zhuzihu area, the department said. Concerts will also be staged, it added.
At Friday's opening of the festival, Taipei Mayor Ko Wen-je noted that calla lilies are the main cash crop for Zhuzihu.
Over the past several years, the city government has been cooperating with local farms in an effort to develop them into recreational farms, he said.
Zhuzihu has now become one of the must-go destinations for many tourists to Taipei, he said.
Lu Chu-cheng, owner of a calla lily farm in Zhuzihu, said that this year's festival has a theme of animated characters.
