Taipei, March 11 (CNA) The Forbes Travel Guide, nicknamed the Oscars in the travel business, named the Mandarin Oriental Hotel, Taipei, as a five-star hotel in its 2017 rankings, marking the first time a hotel in Taiwan has received the highest rating in the respected rating system.

The Forbes Travel Guide, considered the global authority on luxury travel, sent anonymous professional inspectors to visit and assess hotels, restaurants and spas around the world to check whether these hospitality facilities are up to the travel guide's 800 objective standards.

In its annual rankings, the travel guide names Five-Star, Four- Star and Recommended facilities.

In its latest rankings, the travel guide named 176 hotels and 56 spas in the world in the Five-Star category. Mandarin Oriental, Taipei, which opened in May 2014, was listed as one of the hotels and its spa was named a five-star spa.

In addition, five hotels operating in Taiwan have been named by the guide as four-star hotels. They are the Grand Hyatt Taipei, Regent Taipei, Shangri La's Far Eastern Plaza Hotel Taipei, and W Taipei. Humble House Taipei, meanwhile, was listed in the recommended hotel category.

And Wellspring Spa in the Regent Taipei was in the four- star spa category, according to the travel guide.

According to the travel guide, Mandarin Oriental, Taipei, met the standards in the five-star hotel category as an outstanding and iconic property with "virtually flawless and amazing facilities."

"With prime location, spacious rooms, a large spa, and a bevy of dining options, it's a good choice for both business and leisure travelers," the travel guide said in a statement, adding that the hotel, with 303 rooms and suites, is a short distance from the business and shopping attractions in the capital city, such as the Taipei World Trade Center and the Taipei Arena.

Michael Ziemer, president of Mandarin Oriental, Taipei, said that it was a great honor for his hotel to be named a five-star hotel in the Forbes Travel Guide.

The hotel has hosted many celebrities, such as pop diva Madonna, famous Taiwanese singer Jay Chou, the best leading actress of the Golden Horse Awards Shu Qi and popular Korean actress Jun Ji Hyun.

Joining the growing list of the celebrities hosted by the hotel, Huge Jackman, who plays the role of "Wolverine" in the X-Men movie series, also stayed there in February when he came to Taiwan to promote his latest movie "Logan."

Taiwan's Tourism Bureau, however, launched its own hotel star-rating system a few years ago. So far, there are 493 star-rated hotels in Taiwan under this system, with 68 rated as five-star hotels, including the ones rated by Forbes as four-star facilities. (Courtesy of CNA)
