Taipei, Jan. 5 (CNA) President Tsai Ing-wen has sent a congratulatory message to Haitian President-elect Jovenel Moise, who has been officially declared the winner of November's presidential election, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Thursday.

The ministry noted that Moise, a 48-year-old banana exporter, was elected with 55.6 percent of the vote, well ahead of his closest rival.

Since Taiwan and the Caribbean country established diplomatic relations in 1956, they have had close exchanges and collaboration on programs in the areas of infrastructure, agriculture, public health and vocational training, the ministry said.

It said Taiwan is looking forward to continued cooperation with Haiti's new government to improve the welfare of the people in both countries. (Courtesy of CNA)
