Taipei, Nov. 9 (CNA) The Taiwan government on Wednesday congratulated Republican candidate Donald Trump on winning the United States presidential election and said it hoped for continued close cooperation with the U.S.

"The United States is the most important democratic country in the world and the most solid international partner of Taiwan," President Tsai Ing-wen said in a statement, after Trump gained more than the 270 electoral votes needed to win a tight election against Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton.

"I look forward to cooperating with Trump's new ruling team to continue to improve Taiwan-U.S. relations so that it becomes an important cornerstone for maintaining peace and stability in the Asia-Pacific region," said Tsai whose Democratic Progressive Party came to power earlier this year.

In a statement issued Wednesday, Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) said it had sent Tsai's congratulatory message to the U.S. President-elect.

The U.S. and Taiwan not only share the values of freedom, democracy and human rights, but also a close and special friendship in the fields of politics, security, economy and culture, the ministry said.

"Based on the existing solid foundation, the Republic of China (Taiwan) government hopes to continue to cooperate closely with the new U.S. government, actively strengthen bilateral relations, and work together to promote peace, stability and prosperity in the Asia-Pacific region," the ministry said.(Courtesy of CNA)
