Taipei, Oct. 1 (CNA) Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernandez arrived in Taiwan Saturday on a state visit, during which he will hold talks and exchange honorary decorations with President Tsai Ing-wen, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

During the visit that will last until Oct. 4, Hernandez will be welcomed with a military ceremony presided over by Tsai before the two leaders begin talks at the Presidential Office Monday, the ministry said.

They will release a joint statement after the meeting, the ministry added.

Hernandez is the first head of state among Taiwan's diplomatic allies in Latin America to visit the country since May 20, when Tsai took office as president. His visit is aimed at strengthening bilateral trade and investment relations, the ministry said.

To show the government's appreciation to Hernandez for his efforts to strengthen Honduran relations with Taiwan, Tsai will confer the Order of Brilliant Jade with Grand Cordon on him.

In return, Hernandez will decorate Tsai with the Order of Francisco Morazan Grand Cross with Gold Star.

Meanwhile, Hernandez -- who is leading a delegation that includes senior government officials in economic development, investment, agriculture and foreign affairs -- will host a Honduras investment seminar and trade fair during the visit, the ministry said.

This is Hernandez's third visit to Taiwan. He first visited Taiwan in September 2010 as president of Honduras' National Congress and again in July 2015 as president of the country.

The Republic of China (Taiwan) has maintained diplomatic relations with Honduras for 75 years, the two countries enjoy close cooperation in areas such as trade, social welfare, infrastructure, academia, medical care and technology, according to the ministry. (Courtesy of CNA)
