OCAC Minister Wu and the Foreign Minister of El Salvador Exchange Views on Overseas Compatriot Affairs

Foreign Minister Hugo Martínez of El Salvador, a Central American country with which Taiwan has full diplomatic relations, said when receiving Minister Wu Hsin-hsing of the Overseas Community Affairs Council (OCAC) on August 25 that his country really attaches importance to and cherishes the bilateral relationship with Taiwan, including the close exchange and interaction in areas such as trade, education and culture. He also shared the experienceof overseas compatriot work with Minister Wu.

Wu visited Martínez after attending the 51th Meeting and 44th Convention of Chinese Associations of Central held in El Salvador on August 24.

Martínez attended President Tsai Ing-wen’s inauguration ceremony in Taiwan in May and was deeply impressed by Taiwan’s economic development and democracy. Wu also conveyed best wishes from President Tsai to the President of El Salvador Salvador Sánchez Cerén to Martinez.

During his stay in El Salvador, accompanied by Ambassador of ROC to the country Sing-ying Lee, Wu held a number of discussions with the Taiwanese Chamber of Commerce of El Salvador, Chinese Chamber of Commerce of El Salvador, and the principals and teachers of Chinese schools in EL Salvador, respectively, on subjects including Taiwan-owned business operation and overseas compatriot education work. Taiwanese business owners and overseas compatriots stated that, the government is now focused on the New Southbound Policy, whereas the countries of Latin America are still in need of investment, finance, and agricultural technology assistance. They also hoped that the OCAC can encourage Chinese language teachers to teach at schools in El Salvador and thanked the OCAC for its long-term provision of textbooks and teacher training.
