Taiwan expresses condolences to Italy over deadly quake
Taipei, Aug. 24 (CNA) The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) said Wednesday that it has conveyed its condolences to Italy, on behalf of the government and people of Taiwan, after a devastating earthquake struck central Italy Wednesday morning.
The message of condolence and solidarity was sent via Italy's representative office in Taipei, the ministry said in a press release.
The shallow 6.2 magnitude earthquake struck early Wednesday 10 kilometers southeast of Norcia, a historic tourist town in southeastern Umbria, killing at least 70 people and injuring hundreds, according to international wire services. Search and rescue operations were in progress for more than 100 people still missing, the reports said.
As of the press time, there were no reports of any Taiwanese deaths or injuries in the quake, the MOFA said, citing information provided by Taiwan's representative office in Rome. (Courtesy of CNA)
