President meets Nobel Peace Prize winner Muhammad Yunus

Taipei, Aug. 25 (CNA) President Tsai Ing-wen on Thursday met with Bangladeshi microfinance pioneer Muhammad Yunus, who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2006.

In the meeting, Tsai praised Yunus for his efforts in eliminating poverty and expressed the hope that such a charitable spirit will have a positive impact on Taiwanese society, according to a statement issued by the Presidential Office.

Tsai noted that the Grameen Bank established by Yunus in 1983 has been providing microloans to poor people in Bangladesh and has successfully helped the borrowers out of poverty, inspiring many people around the world.

She said Taiwan is a democratic country in which people enjoy the freedom to turn various ideas into reality and that she hopes people in this country will use their innovative spirit to create a better society. (Courtesy of CNA)
